A gentle adventure, one brave step at a time.
Zouki built a blanket tent in the garden. Mimo filled it with cushions. Gribou carried a little lantern. “Tonight,” he announced, “we shall sleep beneath a sky full of stars!”
At first, the sky was pale blue. Then it turned purple. Then deep, deep blue. Gribou pulled his cape closer. The garden looked different when its colours went to sleep.
A long shape moved across the tent wall. It had thin fingers and a wobbly head. Gribou squeaked. His heart went thump, thump, THUMP. “What is that?” he whispered.
Zouki moved closer. “I don’t know yet. We can look together.” Mimo held out a hand. Gribou took it. He did not have to walk to the doorway alone.
Outside, Zouki lifted a small branch. Inside, its shadow lifted too. He lowered it. The shadow bowed. “Leaves!” said Gribou. He let out a breath he had been holding.
Zouki wiggled the branch. The shadow danced. Gribou wiggled his fingers beside the lantern. A tiny shadow monster waved back. “Good evening,” Gribou said, with a shaky little smile.
Back on his cushion, Gribou frowned. “I know about the branch. But I still feel scared.” “That happens,” said Mimo. “Would you like more light, or someone to sit closer?”
“Both, please,” said Gribou. Mimo nudged his cushion nearer. Zouki turned the lantern up a little. Gribou felt the soft blanket under his hands and took a slow breath.
Something rustled outside. Gribou sat straight up. “Another mystery,” he said. This time he asked, “Will you look with me?” All three peeked out from the tent doorway.
A little hedgehog shuffled beside a flowerpot. Its nose twitched among the leaves. The friends stayed quiet and gave it space. Soon it waddled away, taking the rustling with it.
“Could we try the lantern lower?” asked Gribou. Zouki turned it down one tiny bit. They waited. Gribou could still see his friends. “That much is all right,” he said.
Mimo opened the tent flap. Above the garden, stars scattered across the sky. Gribou counted three, then five, then lost his place. The dark had been hiding something beautiful.
The leafy shadow slid across the wall again. Gribou’s tummy gave a little jump. He watched it sway. “Hello, branch,” he whispered. He knew this visitor now.
“Must we turn the lantern off?” Gribou asked. “It can stay low,” said Zouki. They settled it safely in its place. Gribou did not need to be brave all at once.
Mimo yawned. Zouki tucked in the blankets. “If I feel scared again?” Gribou murmured. “Tell us,” said Mimo. Gribou listened to the familiar breathing beside him and let his shoulders soften.
The garden rested. The branch swayed. The little light glowed. Gribou closed his eyes beneath the stars, warm between his friends. Tonight, a little light and a little help were enough.
