A small berry. A very big decision.
Gribou pushed aside a leaf. Underneath hung the biggest, reddest berry he had ever seen. “Mine!” he whispered. Behind him, Zouki and Mimo were spreading the picnic blanket.
Zouki brought plain yogurt. Mimo brought three spoons. Gribou had promised to find fruit. He looked at the berry, then at his friends. His tummy gave a hopeful little rumble.
Gribou picked the berry and tucked it behind his cape. “Any fruit?” called Mimo. “Still looking!” said Gribou. The words felt scratchy in his mouth. The berry smelled wonderfully sweet.
He slipped behind a tree and climbed onto a stump. One enormous bite would make the berry disappear. But he could still hear the clink, clink, clink of three spoons.
Gribou opened his mouth. Then he paused. Through the branches, he saw Zouki break a small pear in half. Mimo pushed the bigger half back toward Zouki.
The secret seat was quiet. Too quiet. Nobody was there to say, “What a berry!” Nobody was there to laugh at a sticky chin. Gribou climbed down from the stump.
“I found something,” Gribou said. He opened his hands. Mimo gasped. Zouki grinned. “I wanted all of it,” Gribou added softly. “But I think I want our picnic more.”
Mimo fetched three little plates. Zouki carefully cut the berry while the others watched. Snip, slice, slide! There were three pieces. But one was much bigger than the others.
Gribou reached for the biggest piece. Mimo stared at the smallest. Gribou stopped, his hand above the plate. Sharing, he discovered, needed a little more thinking than simply saying yes.
“We could cut them again,” said Zouki. “Or mix them!” said Mimo. Gribou looked at the yogurt. His eyes shone. “Then every spoonful could have a bit of berry.”
Each friend tipped a piece into the bowl. They mashed and mixed, taking turns with the spoon. White yogurt became pink yogurt. A tiny pink splash landed on Gribou’s nose.
“You have a berry moustache!” giggled Mimo. Gribou made his grandest face. “I am the Great Berry King!” Zouki laughed so hard that his empty spoon wobbled.
They filled three small bowls, a spoonful at a time. Gribou watched carefully. One for Zouki. One for Mimo. One for him. Around they went until the big bowl was empty.
The yogurt tasted bright and sweet. Gribou licked his spoon. The berry was smaller now, in his tummy. Somehow, the picnic felt bigger. “Tomorrow,” he said, “let’s look together.”
On the plate lay a tiny seed. “Could we plant it?” asked Mimo. Zouki found a soft patch of soil. Gribou made a little hole with one gentle finger.
They tucked the seed in and watered it. Growing would take time. For now, there was a blanket to fold and a bowl to wash. “Together?” asked Gribou. “Together,” said his friends.
